Constructed in 1904 and expanded in 1911, the building was the flagship department store of Porteous, Mitchell & Braun Co. for some 80 years. Its commanding Congress Street facade is considered one of the finest remaining examples of early 20th-century Beaux-Arts design in Maine.

Purchased by Maine College of Art (MECA) in 1993, the Porteous Building has been transformed into the new core facilities for Maine's only professional college of art and design.
